A Community Presentation: A Hidden Ecological Gem in our Midst: UC’s Benedict Nature Preserve– May 22
The presentation will be held on May 22 at Terwilliger Lodge, 10530 Deerfield Road, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
The Environmental Advisory Commission is pleased to partner with Dr. Theresa Culley, Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cincinnati, for this community presentation on the Benedict Nature Preserve and to provide education on identifying plants and invasive species.
Many residents may not be aware that a large portion of the forested land behind Johnson Nature Preserve is an ecological preserve owned by the University of Cincinnati since 1929. Formerly known as the Hazelwood Preserve, this 65-acre forest was renamed the Harris M. Benedict Nature Preserve after a past professor who inspired students to raise money for its purchase. This preserve is now celebrating its 50th anniversary as a United States National Natural Landmark, one of only a few in the state, due to its unique flora. Scientists have long been using the preserve to conduct groundbreaking research, including studying the effects of the 1999 tornado. Today, the preserve is home to turtles, squirrels, owls, deer, and coyotes along with unique native plant species as well as invasive plants. In this presentation, attendees will learn about the preserve’s history, its role in scientific discoveries, and restoration plans.
