New Seed Library to Open At Swaim Park
A first-of-its-kind seed library will open in Montgomery at the end of April at Swaim Park. Coinciding with Arbor Day, the free library will open just in time to begin your spring plantings. So, what is a seed library?
A seed library is similar to a neighborhood lending library, a place where people can bring and take seeds throughout several growing seasons for their own use in yards or planters. Seed libraries are a wonderful community resource for both adults and children and are perfect for finding a variety of plants that are guaranteed to grow in your area since that is where the seeds are from. The libraries provide empty packages or envelopes that can be taken and marked with the seed identity as well as the best growing techniques and practices. The concept of the library mirrors Montgomery’s Spring and Fall Plant Swaps, held at the Farmer’s Market, where you “bring a plant and take a plant,” only this version involves seeds and happens year-round.
The Montgomery Seed Library will be located at Swaim Park, directly behind the Wilder-Swaim House and next to its beautiful, raised pollinator beds and arbor – just off the parking lot on the corner of Zig Zag and Cooper Roads. This new addition to Swaim Park is sponsored by Montgomery’s Beatification and Tree Commission and will be dedicated to a long-serving member of the commission at a later date in the spring.
