I am honored to be serving another term on Montgomery City Council. I am encouraged that many have trust in me to serve their interests with the governance of the City of Montgomery. Elected officials in small cities play a pivotal role in shaping the community’s present and future. We are conferred with the mandate of public service, carrying the weighty responsibility to represent the interests of you, the constituents, while fostering growth, prosperity, and inclusivity within our community. Understanding what to expect from your elected officials is crucial for fostering transparency, accountability, and effective governance.

So, what can you expect from me, your elected official? First, elected officials in small cities are relied upon to be accessible and responsive to the needs of their residents. Whether addressing concerns about infrastructure, public safety, or local policies, our citizens rely on their representatives to be approachable and attentive listeners who advocate for their interests.

Transparency is another cornerstone of governance. Residents have the right to be informed about the decisions being made on their behalf. Elected officials should prioritize open communication channels, public forums, and regular updates to ensure the community is well-informed and engaged in the decision-making process.

Moreover, integrity and ethical conduct are non-negotiable qualities of elected officials. Small cities thrive on trust and collaboration, and any hint of impropriety can erode public confidence and undermine the fabric of local democracy. We are neighbors and friends. Upholding standards of ethical behavior, avoiding conflicts of interest, and adhering to established codes of conduct are important for maintaining our resident’s trust.

In addition to representing our townspeople locally, many small city officials serve as liaisons to regional and state authorities. I am a member of a county and a state organization. We must effectively communicate the needs and priorities of our community to higher levels of government while also staying informed about broader policy initiatives that may impact our city. Many expect, for effective leadership, an elected official must have a vision for the future. Your representatives should collaborate with residents and the business community to develop strategic plans and policies that promote sustainable development, economic growth, and the welfare of our residents. By fostering innovation and adaptability, we must strive to navigate the complexities of a changing world while safeguarding the unique identity and character of our historic city.

I hope I have summarized what you should expect from me as an elected official in a small city. And I feel we, as a Council, have hit the mark. Yet what is critical to understand is the bond or partnership between myself and you, the resident of Montgomery. The most critical component of performing my job as your representative is understanding that the communication role is a two-way street. I depend on your feedback to have an open dialog about important Montgomery Issues. Feel free to contact your elected officials.
